Erki Savisaar
Minister of the Environment since 18 November 2021.
Erki Savisaar was born on 16 June 1978 in Vastse-Kuuste. He is married with two daughters. Savisaar became a member of the Estonian Centre Party in 2015.
Employment history and career
- From 2015-2021, he was a member of the 13th and 14th Riigikogu
- From 2012-2015, he was the director of the IT Department of Tallinna Linnatranspordi AS
- From 2006-2019, he was a member of the management board of OÜ Fixor Holding
- From 2001-2006, he was a provider of specialist training with BCS Koolitus AS
- From 1998-2001, he was a teacher with Baltic Computer Systems AS
- From 1997-1998, he was the director of the IT Department of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences
- From 1996-1998, he was a teacher at the Tallinn Interschool Training Centre
Education
Erki Savisaar graduated from Tallinn University with a degree in applied informatics in 2003.
In undertaking to perform the duties of a member of the Government of the Republic, I am aware that I shall bear responsibility in this office before the Republic of Estonia and my conscience. I solemnly swear to remain faithful to the constitutional order of the Republic of Estonia and to devote my strength to securing the welfare and future of the people of Estonia.

Minister of the Environment
The Minister of the Environment manages the Ministry of the Environment, and their area of responsibility is the area of governance of the ministry.
The minister is appointed to and released from office by the President of the Republic on the proposal of the prime minister. The minister is sworn in by giving an oath before the Riigikogu.
- The Minister of the Environment coordinates environmental and nature protection and areas linked to the balanced development of the state.
- The Minister of the Environment leads the work of the Ministry of the Environment and makes decisions on matters within the ministry’s area of governance. In addition, the minister reports to the Government of the Republic on the activities of the ministry and presents proposals for decisions to be made on matters within the area of governance of the ministry.
- The Minister of the Environment is responsible for shaping Estonia’s opinions as part of the decision-making process at the level of the European Union and represents Estonia on matters within their area of governance on the Council of the European Union.
- The Minister of the Environment appoints the heads of the government agencies within the ministry’s area of governance as well as the ministry’s deputy secretaries general and managers of departments.
- The Minister of the Environment makes proposals to the Government of the Republic regarding the budget and, where necessary, supplementary budget. They also decide on the use of budgetary resources and monitor the fulfilment of the budget. Furthermore, based on the state budget, the minister approves the budgets of the state agencies within the ministry’s area of governance.
- The Minister of the Environment makes decisions on the formation of state agencies to be managed by the ministry and approves theirs statutes, structure and organisation of work.

The task of the Ministry of the Environment is to create conditions that guarantee a species-rich natural environment and a clean living environment for the people of Estonia today and for future generations and that ensure the sustainable use of natural resources.
