According to Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, there is a threat to the whole of Europe, as Russia has launched a military attack against a sovereign European country. "Russia's widespread aggression is a threat to the entire world and to all NATO countries, and NATO consultations on strengthening the security of the Allies must be initiated to implement additional measures for ensuring the defence of NATO Allies. The most effective response to Russia's aggression is unity. I assure all the people of Estonia that there is no direct military threat to Estonia and that the situation in Estonia and at our external border is calm," Kallas emphasised. "The Government has prepared for this crisis, we are monitoring the situation all the time and ensuring people's safety."
During these consultations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will present Estonia's views on strengthening NATO's deterrence and defense stance in the Baltic region. The Ministry of Defense presents the same views to the Allies according to the cooperation formats. Under Article 4 of the NATO Agreement, the Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened.
The Heads of State and Government of the European Union will hold an emergency European Council meeting in Brussels on Thursday evening.
Estonia's support for Ukraine is steadfast. We stand firm for Ukraine's independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty within its internationally recognised borders. Ukraine needs our political, economic and military support. We must offer strong support to Ukraine.
Russia's military attack on Ukraine could have direct and indirect effects on all European countries. We need to be prepared for possible incidents and prepare for impact management. Countries can be the target of, for example, disinformation campaigns and cyber attacks. More information is available on: https://kriis.ee/en/security-situation-europe
