Granada, 5 October 2023 – The European Political Community Summit, which took place today in Granada, Spain, focused on security and democracy.

“At today’s meeting, I brought up the importance of international organisations and international cooperation and the need to reform the United Nations,” said Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. “Russia’s ability to abuse its veto powers as a permanent member of the Security Council undermines the UN’s ability to act in accordance with its Charter. In addition, Russia is using hybrid attacks to create instability,” the prime minister explained.

“Russia wants to undermine the democratic processes in Europe. Our reaction to Russia’s shadow war will decide what kind of future we live in,” the prime minister said, adding that the roundtable discussion, which focused on multilateralism, also discussed how to fight the spread of misinformation and ensure cyber security, and how to do this together with the private sector.

Prime Minister Kaja Kallas also had a bilateral meeting with the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, to discuss the situation in the Western Balkans and how the European Union can help.

All European countries and the heads of the EU institutions, except for those of Russia and Belarus, were invited to the third European Political Community Summit. The next European Political Community Summit will take place in the United Kingdom in the first half of next year. Previous summits took place in Moldova (2023) and the Czech Republic (2022).

Tomorrow – on Friday, 6 October –, an informal European Council will be held in Granada to discuss the long-term strategic objectives of the European Union, enlargement, and the increased migratory pressure on Europe.
