Stenbock House, 16 November 2022 – The government was briefed at a security cabinet meeting on the missile incident in the village of Przewodów, Poland, which killed two people. Yesterday, Russia launched the largest-ever missile attack against Ukraine, which targeted civilian infrastructure and initially left nearly 10 million Ukrainians without electricity. The threat to the security of Estonia has not increased.

“The incident took place because there is a war going on in Ukraine and Russia is the initiator of this war,” said Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. The prime minister emphasised that the security situation in Estonia has not changed. “It is important to remember that there is no active military activity near our border and there is no direct military threat to Estonia.” According to the prime minister, the main conclusion is that it is necessary to continue supporting Ukraine in every way. “The responsibility for the suffering caused by the aggression lies entirely with Russia. The only thing that will end this suffering is Ukraine winning this war," said the prime minister.

The Minister of Defence Hanno Pevkur confirmed that information related to the incident is being exchanged with Polish colleagues all the time. “Although the incident in Poland is still being investigated, based on the preliminary data, there is no indication of a deliberate attack. It could have been a Ukrainian air defence missile to protect Ukraine from a Russian missile attack. During the night, Russia fired more than 90 missiles at Ukrainian civilian infrastructure to terrorise the Ukrainian population, which is the highest number of missiles fired in one day so far. We will fully support Poland if they need our help.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Reinsalu emphasised that in order to end the aggression, additional sanctions must be approved and the international isolation of Russia must be continued. “In addition, we must continue to provide comprehensive military, economic, and political support to Ukraine and bring the persons responsible for the aggression and war crimes under international justice. As long as Russia continues its unjustified and brutal war, civilians will continue to suffer in Ukraine. Therefore, Estonia will present its specific proposals to allies and partners in NATO and the European Union in order to ensure united and determined further action to end the aggression.”

Commenting on the situation related to the national security of Estonia, the Minister of the Interior Lauri Läänemets said that they are ready to react immediately if the slightest indication of danger appears. “If there are signs that indicate a planned sabotage or terrorist act, we will react immediately. Together with the Ministry of the Interior and subordinate agencies, we have been constantly preparing to respond to, control, and prevent possible events. Different scenarios and procedures have been played out. However, I would like to emphasise that at this moment, Estonian residents have no reason to feel directly threatened.”
