Versailles, 11 March 2022 – Early this morning, the heads of state and government of the European Union adopted a joint statement confirming that Ukraine has a place in the European Union.

“We agreed with our European colleagues that Ukraine has a place in the European Union, and with today’s joint statement, we have created a legal basis for the accession process. This is a historic and clear step for Ukraine and the European Union,” said Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. “It is our moral duty to support Ukrainians and their request to join. Ukraine’s fight for freedom and democracy is a fight for the whole of Europe and the free world,” said the prime minister.

Today, the heads of state and government will continue yesterday’s discussions about further sanctions, isolating Russia, improving energy security, enhancing the EU’s defence capabilities, and reinvigorating the economy.
