Brussels, 15 December 2021 – Prime Minister Kaja Kallas today met with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili in Brussels, where they discussed bilateral cooperation, security matters and implementation of democratic reforms.

“Georgia and Estonia are close partners and good friends,” said Prime Minister Kaja Kallas following the meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Garibashvili. “Estonia supports Georgia diplomatically, including via new initiatives and development cooperation under the Eastern Partnership,” said Kallas. “We also discussed the escalated security situation. It is clear that every country has the right to make their own foreign and security policy choices. I assured the Georgian prime minister that we back their Euro-Atlantic efforts and do not accept the demands to cease NATO’s enlargement policy.”

“We have walked the same road and know that it can be full of twists and turns. It is important to ensure substantial progress in implementing democratic reforms and adherence to the rule of law. This is the only way to increase the well-being of the country and its residents,” said Kallas and added that in addition to internal efforts, it is also important to use the opportunities for international cooperation and partnership.

Georgia is an active member of the Eastern Partnership and we support its closer association with the European Union. The European Union’s new Economic and Investment Plan expands Georgia’s cooperation opportunities with the EU and other Eastern Partnership countries. Georgia also continues to be a high-priority target country for development cooperation.
