Stenbock House, 1 April 2024 – Madis Timpson gave his oath of office before the Riigikogu and was sworn in as Minister of Justice today, replacing Kalle Laanet.

“It is very important to those in the field of justice that the Minister of Justice is educated in law or comes from a legal background,” remarked Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. “Madis Timpson not only has that in his favour, but also has management experience, which will be of great benefit to him in his new role. He previously worked in the Ministry of Justice for seven years and, until his appointment as minister, served for the same length of time as the mayor of Viljandi. Given his education and experience, I am sure that he will handle his new responsibilities with aplomb.”

Madis Timpson studied both history and law at the University of Tartu, graduating with a Master’s degree from the Faculty of Law in 2001. He has previously worked as an advisor to both the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Regional Affairs, helping to plan and implement administrative reforms. He also spent seven years advising the Minister of Justice, during which time he contributed to the development of the Public Service Act, among other things. Immediately prior to being appointed Minister of Justice he was serving as the mayor of Viljandi. He also has experience working in the private sector.

Prime Minister Kaja Kallas presented Madis Timpson to President Alar Karis as the proposed new Minister of Justice on 24 March, simultaneously submitting the letter of resignation of outgoing Minister of Justice Kalle Laanet. President Karis duly appointed Timpson to the post. The new minister was sworn in today upon giving his oath of office before the Riigikogu.
