Stenbock House, 26 October 2023 – Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is attending a meeting of the heads of state and government of the European Union in Brussels today and tomorrow. This morning she will be taking part in the Global Gateway Forum and Renew Europe meeting and holding both bilateral and multilateral meetings. Following today’s events, the Euro Summit will be held on Friday.

“At the European Council meeting we will be discussing additional support for Ukraine, the state of the EU economy, the steps that need to be taken to boost competitiveness and the priorities of the mid-term revision of the EU budget,” Prime Minister Kallas explained. “To Estonia it is very important that we fulfil our promise to support Ukraine for as long as is necessary. To that end, we will also be reviewing the EU budget to ensure that our support is sustainable and enables us to boost Europe’s own defence readiness. Moreover, I will stress that we await an agreement on further sanctions and on the use of frozen Russian assets to assist Ukraine.”

Ahead of the European Council meeting, at 9:30 (Brussels time), the Estonian head of government will be opening the digital infrastructure session at the Global Gateway Forum on sustainable economic growth. The session will be livestreamed on the forum’s website. Global Gateway forms part of the EU’s connectivity strategy, which aims to promote high-quality, long-lasting infrastructure projects around the world, thereby reducing the digital gap in less developed regions in particular.

After this, Prime Minister Kallas plans to meet with President Vahagn Khachaturyan of Armenia to discuss regional security.

In the afternoon the head of government will be taking part in a meeting of the Renew Europe group of liberal political parties.

Immediately prior to the European Council meeting, Prime Minister Kallas is scheduled to meet with the heads of state and government of the Nordic countries, the Baltic States and Ireland to discuss said meeting. She also plans to meet with the heads of government of Finland and Sweden to discuss matters pertaining to the protection of critical undersea infrastructure.

The meeting of the heads of state and government of the EU will continue on Friday. The Euro Summit will be held in the afternoon, at which the economy and current state of the euro area will be discussed.
