Prime Minister Kaja Kallas stressed that Estonia highly appreciates the work of soldiers serving in foreign missions. “The readiness of the Defence Forces and you to ensure security and stability at home and abroad are an important source of security for our country. Your commitment strengthens our country’s defence capability and security. My heartfelt thanks to you for the work you have done, and to your loved ones who selflessly support you.” said Kallas.
The prime minister also praised the professionalism and high level of skills of the Estonian mission soldiers. “You don’t just talk the talk, you take action and always go above and beyond. I am happy to say that Estonian men and women are highly valued by our allies – they know that you can be trusted and counted on,” said Kallas.
The prime minister also pointed out that Estonia helps to ensure international security by participating in foreign missions. “This is an important investment in strengthening our alliance. Missions abroad also play an important role in training and in applying lessons learned in real life. Thanks to you, our Defence Forces have practical combat experience, which will make the national defence of Estonia stronger,” she said.
At the appreciation event, the prime minister also stressed that Estonia will not forget the 12 Estonian servicemen who have paid the highest price for their participation in foreign missions, nor those who have been injured while serving abroad. Kallas encouraged the use of state-provided support services, such as psychological support or rehabilitation, when needed, and noted that talking about and acknowledging problems shows strength.
The largest number of soldiers attending today’s reception have served in Iraq with operation Inherent Resolve and Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG1). Also among the invitees are mission soldiers who have served in Mozambique, Lebanon, Israel, and Italy.
