The Estonian head of government congratulated President-Elect Trump on the strong mandate he secured in the recent elections before assuring him that Estonia remains a committed and trustworthy ally in transatlantic relations.
Prime Minister Michal also stressed the importance of continued assistance for Ukraine in order to achieve a just and lasting peace. “Putin’s objectives have not changed in the course of the war,” he noted. “As before, he aims to conquer the whole of Ukraine and fundamentally alter Europe’s security architecture. The only pathway to lasting peace is for us to remain united and to continue to support Ukraine to victory.”
Reaffirming Estonia’s support for bolstering NATO’s defence capabilities and boosting defence spending in Europe, the head of government remarked: “The alliance’s 2% defence spending target is no longer sufficient given the growing Russian threat. A new common spending target must be agreed by the time of next year’s NATO summit in the Hague at the latest.” This year, Estonia is allocating 3.4% of its GDP to defence.
