Governments of Estonia and Latvia to Hold Joint Session in Tartu on August 27

Stenbock House, 19 August 2025 – On Wednesday, 27 August, the governments of Estonia and Latvia will convene for their second joint session to engage in in-depth discussions on bilateral cooperation and the future of the region. Following the session, a Joint Decision will be adopted. Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal and Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa will also hold a joint press conference.

During the discussions, ministers from both countries will focus on key areas including security and crisis preparedness, the development of transport links and major joint infrastructure projects, enhancing regional competitiveness, and advancing cooperation in the digital sphere. Emphasis will be placed on joint efforts related to the upcoming EU Multiannual Financial Framework.

The joint session will be preceded by a visit to the Kuperjanov Infantry Battalion in Võru. The official program will conclude with the Award Ceremony of the Joint Award of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia for the Promotion of the Estonian and Latvian Languages, which will take place at Tartu Town Hall. The award will be presented by Ministers Margus Tsahkna and Baiba Braže.

Members of the media are invited to cover the morning visit to the Kuperjanov Battalion at 11.00, which will include a group photo, a presentation on the living conditions of military personnel and military equipment, followed by lunch in the canteen. The joint press conference by the prime ministers is scheduled for 15:10 in the Morgenstern Hall of the museum. The press conference will be conducted in Estonian and Latvian and will be also available via live online streaming. At 17:30, the Language Award ceremony will take place at Tartu Town Hall. Journalists are welcome to attend and may conduct interviews with the laureates and foreign affairs ministers afterwards. The Estonian and Latvian Language Award aims to raise awareness of both languages and recognize the contributions of translators, linguists, teachers, and language learning projects that promote Estonian and Latvian.
