According to Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, Estonia has been an unwavering supporter of the accession of Ukraine and Moldova. “The unity of the European Union will be preserved and we will be able to look the candidate countries in the eye because they are taken into consideration,” said the prime minister.
The prime minister separately highlighted the opening of accession talks with Ukraine. “In this brutal war that has been going on for almost two years, the Ukrainian people need to be given hope. At the same time, they have done an incredible job in meeting the conditions set by the EU, and the invitation is a fair reflection of their progress. And the European Union is certainly not the only step on the road to helping Ukraine – it must also become a member of NATO, the world’s most powerful defence alliance,” she added.
Prime Minister Kallas is taking part in the European Council starting on Thursday, the main topics of which are EU enlargement, continued support for Ukraine, and agreeing on a supplementary EU budget for the next four years.
